This  concept is especially important because marketers often heavily rely on  email marketing since they can reach their entire customer base at once.  However, marketers need to realize that untargeted, mass emails could  actually result in harmful effects on their business.&lt;br /&gt;Multiple emails, irrelevant offers, and impersonalized messages will,  most likely, turn customers away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Uplift modeling, on the other hand,  is an analytical approach to email marketing that examines the different  levels of customer data. This data then identifies which customers will  buy, which customers will never buy, and how they will react to the  email message.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the intellects behind this concept is Mark Smith of Portrait  Software. He recommends dividing email subscribers into 4 segments  including Sure Things, Persuadables, Sleeping Does, and Lost Causes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sure Things &lt;/strong&gt;are the subscribers that do not need an  incentive to buy. They don't need to be sent discounts or promotions  since they are going to make a purchase even without the prompting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Persuadables&lt;/b&gt; are slightly different since they will buy, but they  have to be pushed a little. In other words, they take action after they  receive a discount or promotion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sleeping Dogs&lt;/strong&gt; do not want to be bothered by a  continuous stream of emails. They act only on their own terms. If  marketers constantly prod this segment, chances are these subscribers  will unsubscribe or take their business elsewhere.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lost Causes&lt;/strong&gt; are the last segment and will not budge  at even the best offer. In this case, marketers should probably take  this segment out of its campaign since it will not offer any benefits.   So, now does uplift modeling make sense? Companies in the business products and services vertical tended to have the quickest customer response, with 52% of transactions and 79% of revenue received in the first day, according to the study. Travel was the slowest, with 13% of transactions and 11% of revenue occurring in the first day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The study also found that transactions and revenue response times can significantly vary by mailing type and subject line content. However, all signs point to a much more  social-infused web as we move further into the future, and that social  media-related advertising is only going to become bigger and bigger, and  likely more effective.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm guessing that the longer you have had a social media presence, the  more successful you will be able to be with advertising in new models  based upon existing social networks. For example, you need followers to  reap any benefits from Twitter's recently launched Promoted Tweets.  Twitter will not promote a tweet if you don't have a great deal of  engagement. Engagement requires followers on Twitter. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mashable's Adam Ostrow has a good article on what Twitter's new ad model  could mean for small business. He writes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"Thousands of companies - large and  small - are already on Twitter. Promoted Tweets introduces a way for  these businesses to gain extra exposure for their messages. For example,  if you own a coffee shop, when a user searches for "coffee" on Twitter,  you'll conceivably be able to have a tweet from your business sit atop  the results."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"However, these ads shouldn't be  thought of like traditional forms of online advertising, like a banner  or even a text link in search, but rather an extension of what you're  already doing on Twitter. Promoted Tweets will sink or swim - quite  literally - based on the response they get from users."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He goes on to talk about the potential addition of location capabilities  to promoted tweets and mobile use. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Then you have Facebook. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The company, as you have no doubt heard by now, has made big waves  throughout the Internet with the launch of its new Open Graph initiative  and social plugins. Facebook is consuming the web, or at least it is  certainly trying to. While Facebook already has a pretty interesting ad  system with in its network, which targets ads to users based on the  information they've shown in their profiles. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some, including myself have speculated that Facebook may one day launch  its own AdSense-style ad network, which would harness such data to  display ads around the web. The company has made no indication that it  will do this, but why wouldn't they? Now, with the Open Graph and sites  all over the web including the social plugins (like buttons, etc.), more  and more user data is making its way to the profile, and other places  on the web that are connected to that open graph. Obviously there is  incredible potential for ad targeting here. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So with both &lt;a href="http://twitter.com/yourconnection"&gt;Twitter&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#%21/pages/YourConnection-Australia/39458488220?ref=ts"&gt;Facebook&lt;/a&gt; making interesting moves of late,  where does that leave the business that has not dipped its feet into the  social media pool at all? It leaves them behind. The longer you stay  away from social media, the further behind you will be in attracting  fans/followers/engagement. You're not only potentially missing out on  current benefits, but may be losing out on future benefits as well. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm not saying you can't run a successful business without social media  participation, but this stuff isn't going away, and there is only more  and more applications, strategies, and opportunities being built upon  it. That is, as a &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"  &gt;&lt;i&gt;general&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"  &gt; rule 80% of the income for your business comes from 20% of your customers. Now i can hear you already saying 'no way that's not true' and for some of you that may be the case, though as i mentioned it is a 'general' rule. and generally you will find that 20% pay their accounts on time, return regularly, purchase often and aren't bothered too much with your prices.... and you like them!&lt;p&gt;                  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;p  style="text-align: center; font-family: verdana;font-family:Verdana;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;p&gt;With that said, many business experts and marketing professionals will then tell you to go out and spend money on different, often expensive advertising campaigns to get the other 80% of your customers.... BAD idea! Why spend all that money, and im talking thousands of dollars to potentially get you 1, 2, 10 more clients that want to haggle on price, give you grief and waste your time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="text-align: left; font-family: verdana;font-family:Verdana;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;So what then do i suggest you do? well i am a 'practice what you preach' type person, so with that I suggest an active review of your current marketing practices and review of who your client's are. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Easier said than done though what kind of person would i be if i didn't at least give you a few questions that, when answered honestly will automatically start you thinking of ways to implement them, just make sure you have a pen and paper handy, because when they come, they keep coming.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-family: verdana;font-family:Verdana;" &gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Ask yourself&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol style="font-family: verdana;font-family:Verdana;" &gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Who are my best clients? These can be specific names of people or businesses or a group or demographic of clients.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;What are they buying? Keep your answers general, to categories of products or services&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;What are my most profitable products? highest profit margin NOT most expensive!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"  &gt;WOW simple questions I know though ones that may not have been specifically thought about in detail. This will give you a rough guide to who your clients are and their buying habits are and where you want them to be. Armed with this information your now more capable of promoting these products or services.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, how to get them to come back? You know who they are, what they buy and what you want them to buy so there are 2 things that i want you to do&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;ol style="font-family: verdana;font-family:Verdana;" &gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Collect their details, First name, last name and email address (as a minimum, the more info you get without being obtrusive the better)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Ask them to come back!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"  &gt;Easy isn't it! You can ask them to come back in many ways from using a targeted email marketing campaign to offer incentives, up sell, cross sell with other products / services.
